LES AVENTURES DE TRACY, ANTON, JAKE ET TOBY

Victoria

We spent March Break at Victoria BC visiting Tracy’s wonderful Aunt Rachel. It was our second time visiting Vancouver Island, we spent 10 days there about a decade ago.

Ever since I first visited the Vancouver Island I’ve loved it. Seems to have everything, most of the best bits about Canada, and of course better weather and proximity to the sea. A few months after moving to Ottawa, it hit me hard how land locked we were – how unnatural it was for me to be away for the sea and the mountains ( I grew up in Ireland ).

So I couldn’t believe our luck when Rachel invited us for March break. We could only spend a few days there because of the definite time limits of March Break for my teacher wife and our two school age kids, and also because the cost of flying seemed to double if we didn’t travel Monday-Friday.

Rachel spoiled us with delicious breakfasts, and we ate out a couple of nights – one night Rachel ate pizza with the kids while Tracy and I had a bit of time to ourselves, and another night we ate all together at a restaurant  beside the sea.

During the days we visited the Bug Zoo, the BC Museum, downtown and the Beaches. It was rainy most days, but it was warm compared to the wintery weather we’d been experiencing in Ottawa.

One day as we walked down to a beach, the seagulls just dispersed even though we were no where near them. As we walked closer to where they were, something black shot over our heads … as we walked further it all made more sense.

A beautiful eagle was eating lunch in a far from beautiful way. Amazing that these huge birds of prey live so freely so close to a city.

We had a lovely time – a really simple and graceful stay. Thanks so much, Rachel. I’m very serious about wanting to move!

The change you want to see

Have you ever heard the Ghandi quotation 'Be the change you want to see in the world'? Well, on a small level I started something to make a change that I want to see. For the past few months, with spare hours gathered here and there, I've been independently developing a 'cloud based' application for organizing kids community soccer teams in our section of the city of Ottawa. Last night I unveiled my progress at Flash Camp Ottawa. My project was motivated by a few things. First and foremost, I wanted to solve a problem that I experienced last Spring. Spring is time ...

Winterlude

It is Family day here in Ontario. Yesterday we drove down to the annual Ottawa Winterlude festival on the Rideau Canal. It's a neat festival, and a great way to appreciate the cold days of February. There wasn't a cloud in the sky yesterday. It was -11C under the pale blue sky as we were showered by ice crumbs hurled by the chainsaws at the ice carving competition. This was also the first year that we'd all been able to skate self sufficiently for a few kilometers. So after checking out the magnificent ice sculptures, we took off down the canal for ...

Lunch-bag Notes

Confessions of a lunch-making dad ... from time to time I put a note in Jake and Toby's lunch-bag. It might say 'you are a woodle!', or 'go sens go!', or 'Toby Rocks!', 'Jake Rules!' I wrap their sandwiches up in parchment paper and sometimes draw a label on them like 'Jakester Sandwich Company'. Sometimes I write riddles with permanent ink on a ziplock sandwich bag. This week I had the idea to make a comic strip for them, with each days note continuing the story. The story in the comic strip was 'loosely based' on a  real event that happened ...

Cobalt Blue

Our kids become very excited about packing their own backpacks when we travel anywhere. Essentials include at least one book, a Webkin, and their Nintendo DS. I've been trying to explain that the more they pack, the more they have to keep track of, and the heavier and bulkier their bags will be. That doesn't seem to matter much to a nine year old or seven year old boy, where every single one of their possessions is equally essential, entirely precious and unquestionably deserving to be packed. In the flurry of activity as we prepared to travel to Washington DC, Jake ...

National Mall

For the past couple of days, we've been making the most of the impressive and amazing US National Museums in Washington DC. Tracy's aeroplan airmiles were about to expire. I had a stock of them saved up too - so we had enough for a nearby flight to somewhere in the US. We've been to NY and Boston before, and we heard that Washington DC had a lot of sights to see - so here we are. We're not disappointed! For one thing there is no snow here. The sun was shining all day today, although there was a bit of a ...

Christmas Eve 2008

It was difficult to motivate myself to get up and go into work today. I had to work hard to stop thinking it was Christmas eve, especially since nearly all the people that I work with took vacation this week. My mornings have been a shambles for the past week or two. I've been consistently pretty good at getting into work before 08:30 each day - mostly arriving around 08:15. As the day grows older, I find that my effectiveness lessens - the exception to that rule being if I work really late ( for instance before a mid evening soccer ...

Hockey

Toby played in his first hockey tournament this weekend. His team won their last game in a thrilling shootout, having tied the game with only about 10-15 seconds left in the final period. Hockey has dominated a lot of my winter this year. It takes a bit of commitment as a parent. Toby plays twice every weekend - usually very early in the mornings. If he has a 7 am practice, it means that we need to get up at 6am. It takes a good 10 - 15 minutes for him to get suited up for a game - there are ...

Solstice

During a geography lesson maybe 25 years ago, our teacher taught us about Equinoxes and Solstices. I remember being really tuned into the lesson and the idea of the longest and shortest days. At this time of year, I really struggle to get going in the mornings - especially here in Ottawa, the coldest capital city on the planet. My clock goes off at 6:30. It is pitch black dark, and depending on the day, it is usually cold and snowy outside. Some days I've only had about 6 hours sleep preceded by an ill advised late night game of indoor ...

Chopsticks

Once in a while a simple, organic experience reminds me that I'm lucky to be a dad, and especially lucky to see the personality of my children unfold. On Tuesday afternoon I took Jake to the dentist for a filling - I know, I know too much candy and not enough flossing. While Jake and I sat in the waiting room until it was time for his appointment Jake asked if I'd like to learn a new game that one of his friends had taught him. The game was called 'Chopsticks' and is played using the fingers on your hands. It's a ...
